Avon Dam

On our journey down to Devon on Saturday, we paused for a short but truly memorable walk to the Avon Dam.
It’s a wonderful little hike, and while it isn’t long, it’s packed with beauty. The car park, which has the added convenience of a toilet, tends to fill up quickly, so arriving early is definitely recommended. Some walkers took alternative routes from here, and there’s even a Tor nearby for those keen to explore further (more details in the links below).
As we set off, we came across the hunt moving through the landscape, accompanied by hunt saboteurs keeping a watchful eye. Packs of hounds darted across the moorland, but interestingly, they showed no interest in the walkers or their dogs. I was particularly relieved as I had my small dogs with me, and their safety is always at the front of my mind.
Low-hanging clouds hugged the landscape, adding a mysterious, almost otherworldly atmosphere as we approached the dam. The mist softened the view, making the lake behind the dam feel hidden and secretive, waiting to be discovered.
Along the way, I noticed how nature had quietly decorated the trees and shrubs—soft green lichen draped over branches like delicate threads, creating an ethereal contrast against the darker bark. The varying shades of green, though subtle, were perfectly blended by nature’s palette.
We stopped at a picnic table overlooking the water, unwrapping our lunch while listening to the gentle roar of the water cascading over massive rocks nearby. It was a truly stunning spot, peaceful and wild all at once.
I haven’t explored Dartmoor much, but this little detour was an unexpected delight, and a reminder of how special this corner of the country is.
I highly recommend this short but rewarding walk—but make sure to get there early to really enjoy the tranquillity.
